I love all the seasons for different reasons. But there is something so special about spring. The longer, lighter days. Nature waking up with yellow bursts of daffodils and trees laden with blossom. Feeling the first warm sun rays on my face.
January is the worst time to make big resolutions as we are still in the thick of hibernation. All too often we see these good intentions trail off within a few weeks. Spring, however, is a wonderful opportunity to introduce gentle changes into your routine. Make these changes completely painless and ACHIEVABLE. Here are a few examples:
- Skip breakfast every Monday. Replace it with warm water and a squeeze of lemon.
2. Once a week, go to your local green space for a gentle morning walk. It is SO beneficial as you get your daily dose of Vitamin D (even if it’s cloudy), you will be in nature which has great mental health benefits, and you will be getting some exercise. It’s a three in one!
3. As the mornings are lighter and we naturally wake earlier, take just 3 minutes in the morning to sit quietly before starting your day. Sit comfortably and relaxed. Close your eyes. Notice your breath. Don’t fight your thoughts, just welcome and release each one as it comes. Three minutes will be up before you know it. There is no need to meditate for 30 minutes in a lotus position! Maybe start by doing this on the same Monday morning when you skip breakfast.
4. Put a timer on for 15 minutes and clean and organise just one draw of your clothes drawer or desk. Listen to uplifting music or a podcast while you do it. Don’t go beyond the timer. If you feel inspired to do it again the next day or the next week, then do so.
The above are just suggestions – there will be many more positive changes that you can think of that work for you. The important thing is to make them gentle, painless, and achievable as this is key to keeping good habits going. When you start to reap the rewards from your first couple of new habits (which you will), it will inspire you to keep going and make more. Remember, praise yourself for every achievement, no matter how small – it’s a triumph! Do get in touch to let me know what changes you have made – I would love to hear and we can share them on the website!
Wishing you all health and happiness.
