Part 2 – Vitamin D and Cholesterol.
Vitamin D and cholesterol work together.
As I explained last week in Part 1, we make Vitamin D from the sun. However in order to convert that sunlight into Vitamin D that the body can use, we need CHOLESTEROL. The cholesterol in our cells is the raw material that starts the conversion process. It later gets further transformed in the body, but that crucial first step is reliant on cholesterol.
Now, if you are low in Vitamin D, your body will make more cholesterol in the hope that when your skin does eventually get some sunlight on it, it will be able to convert every last ray into Vitamin D! Often I see with patients who have a low Vitamin D and elevated cholesterol, that just by treating the Vitamin D alone, the cholesterol levels improve.
